There are plenty of people out there who absolutely love skiing. But this does not necessarily mean they are in the right physical condition to do so. For example if you have weak knees or you simply aren’t used to taking this form of exercise, you might want to work up to it first.
On top of this you need to think about whether or not you should ski at all if you are pregnant. Obviously it is not just your health and safety on the slopes you need to think about – it is the safety of your baby as well.
The primary concern is whether or not you will be allowed to fly at the stage of pregnancy you happen to be at. For example the general cut off for flying when pregnant is around 28 weeks, although this can and does vary between airlines and it also depends on your condition. Some women have very healthy pregnancies and breeze through them easily, while others have untold problems.
When it comes to skiing you need to be sensible and consider whether it is a good idea to do so. Obviously you wouldn’t want to go down a black run – the most difficult slope of all – when you are eight months pregnant. But if you are tackling the nursery slopes at three months pregnant this is a different matter entirely.
The problem here then is not in the actual skiing itself. The issue is with the potential of falling over and injuring yourself. And there is no real way to protect your tummy if you do. There is also the issue of finding it more difficult to get travel insurance if you are going to go skiing; not all companies may agree to insure you for this reason.
For the most part it is simply common sense to consider whether or not you should be skiing. If you take a tumble it could have consequences for both you and your baby, so you may wish to sit things out or at least take things steady if you are going to go.
It would certainly be a good idea to start skiing from scratch after you have had the baby rather than before, since this is the time when you are most likely to fall over. As you can see, it pays to think ahead in this situation.
