Skis – Should You Rent Or Buy?

If you are heading abroad to go skiing in the near future, you are probably wondering whether to rent or buy your own skis. Lots of people have their own that they take with them on holiday, but if you are fairly new to the sport this might not be the best idea.

For starters if this is your very first time you are definitely better off renting when you get to your resort. You may not even like skiing and if you decide that it isn’t for you, you will have bought an expensive pair of skis for nothing. And let’s face it skis aren’t the cheapest thing you will ever have found.

But if you are going to rent them it pays to do a bit of research before you leave for your holiday. Some skiing holidays will tell you up front what is available and what isn’t, so make sure that ski hire isn’t already included before you make any other arrangements. Ask the travel agent you booked your holiday with and get the required information from them.

You can also visit the website of the venue you are going to, in order to get prices for ski hire. You may be able to book in advance online directly with them, which can sometimes get you a discount. Always check all the options to see which one will suit you the best.

Another possibility is to borrow some skis from someone you know. But remember that you should try them on for size and fit before doing so. Don’t just take them and hope for the best!

The thing to remember is that different people will require different skis. They differ in length and the pair that will be ideal for you may differ greatly from those your friend wears. A lot will also depend on the type of skiing you want to do. For example downhill skiing will need a different style and shape of ski to cross country skiing. If you don’t know what you will be doing until you arrive, you are better off hiring your skis when you get there.

As you can see, skis can be complicated. If you are a frequent skier you will know this, but things can be very different for the novice. The bottom line is to rent them if you are a beginner, and if you like skiing you can then think about investing money in your own set.
