Ski Goggles

A Selection of the Best Selling Ski Googles

What is the purpose of ski goggles?

Protection is the main aim, and in more ways than one too. Their main aim is to make sure the sun doesn’t adversely affect your eyes or vision.

Even if you have never been skiing before, you will no doubt have been out in the snow when the sun is shining. When this happens, the glare off the snow can be very strong, and this can make it difficult to see where you are going. You have to squint to try and protect your eyes.

Now just imagine doing that if you are skiing down a mountain. Quite apart from the fact that it would be dangerous, you’ve also got the added danger of having snow and other stuff being kicked up into your face. All of that added together means you could end up having an accident.

That’s why you wear ski goggles. They give you the UV protection that you need, and you will also be able to protect a good deal of your face as well. Incidentally, the higher the UV rating, the more protection they will give you. So don’t just grab the first pair you see on sale until you have read through the following pointers.

What if you have to wear glasses normally?

Buying ski goggles isn’t too much of a problem if you don’t need to wear glasses for distance vision. But if you do, you’ll need to make sure you get a pair that will fit over the top of your glasses and allow you to wear them as normal.

Make sure you go to a dedicated ski supplies shop that has a good range of goggles for you to try. The main difference with ski goggles that are designed to go over glasses is that they will be bigger than their normal counterparts. This does of course mean you are liable to pay a little more for them, but since they will be necessary it is an important purchase.

You should make sure that the glasses you normally wear aren’t knocked askew or made to feel uncomfortable by the ski goggles. If they feel strange or awkward, then keep looking for a better pair. You may have better luck looking online if you can’t find any locally, but be sure you can return anything you buy if it doesn’t fit.

What else should you be looking for in the ideal pair of ski goggles?

As with all ski items, you need to balance comfort with functionality. It’s no good if the item is perfectly comfortable but it doesn’t serve the purpose it was designed for.

So with that in mind, here is a brief run down of the things you need to look for and be thinking about.

How many lenses?

This might seem like a crazy question. Anyone who wears glasses on a regular basis knows that you have a lens for each eye.

But ski goggles don’t work like this. First of all, if you look at a standard pair of ski goggles you will see that the lens part is a single unit. You don’t have one separate lens for each eye. This gives you a greater degree of protection in every sense.

Ski goggles differ from regular glasses in that they can have several lenses. It goes without saying that the more expensive the goggles are, the more lenses they are likely to have in place. The reason for this is that more lenses equates to less fogging – and that can really be useful when you are skiing. The last thing you want is for your goggles to fog up when you are halfway through a run.

Which lens colour should I choose?

The lens colour is not just down to fashion, and choosing what will match your skiwear. The colour signifies which conditions you will get the best results from when you are wearing those ski goggles. For example, yellow lenses are a good all round choice, whereas clear lenses are best if there isn’t any sun at all.

Think about what the weather is likely to be like when you are away, and buy accordingly. You can also invest in more than one pair if you are going to be skiing a lot.

Which pair fits the best?

The only way to answer this question is to try them on. And you should do this with your ski helmet in place too, even if it means taking it shopping with you!

After all, you need to wear your goggles exactly as you will be wearing them on the slopes. If you try a pair on without your helmet you might think they would be the perfect fit. But once you have your helmet on it could be a very different story indeed. Ski goggles also have a strap that goes around the back of your head. Make sure this is adjustable and works for you, since everyone has a different sized head.

The other thing to look for in a pair of ski goggles is comfort. There will be a layer of foam which covers the outer frame of the goggles and presses into your face. This makes them fit even better and gives you more protection against the goggles themselves if you should take a spill while you are out on the slopes.
