Hemsedal

If you’ve never heard of this skiing resort before, that’s probably because it isn’t very well known. When you compare it with major skiing destinations like Austria and Switzerland, you will see why many people opt for bigger and better places to go and strap their skis on at.

Don’t dismiss it altogether though. It has the best altitudes of all the ski areas in Norway, and the ski centre there has been going for over four decades. There are also two parks specifically designed to keep snowboarders happy, so if you fancy a change from the skis then you will no doubt be pleased with what you find.

It’s also set up to appeal more to beginners than any other skiers. That is probably the main reason why most skiers with experience go elsewhere. But with plenty of green and blue slopes to choose from, Hemsedal welcomes beginners everywhere.

Oppdal

The name Oppdal is roughly translated from the term ‘upper valley’, and you’ll see what an ideal name this is when you visit.

Once again, it isn’t the best known skiing area but then none of Norway’s offerings are particularly famous – and perhaps wrongly so on occasion. You’ve got four great mountains to choose from, and its pretty kid friendly as well, so you are likely to see plenty of families here.

As such it isn’t the best place to go if you enjoy the après ski part of the whole skiing experience, but in any event it’s good for experienced skiers while still offering plenty for the not so steady ones among us.

When it comes to finding accommodation you’ll have plenty to choose from. Oppdal is one of those resorts that can suit most budgets, so if you are looking for somewhere that isn’t going to be overrun with twenty somethings, you might want to give it a go.
